Maya's Monday

An extreme close-up

Nap time for Maya

Daisy is lobbying for additional treats based on her new baby-sitting responsibilities

Maya had a busy day today. She went to the pediatrician for her her 5 - 7 day check-up. She's doing well and hasn't lost any weight since leaving the hospital. She has another appointment next week and is expected to gain some weight by then. She then came home and was supervised by big sister Daisy during her nap. We're not sure that Daisy is a reliable baby-sitter, as she appears to be sleeping on the job! Ken was officially initiated into fatherhood today....Maya peed on his hand! He was extremely grateful at that point in time that she's not a boy :-).

Maya Pictures!

We were released from the Hospital and arrived home this afternoon. Maya has made a smooth transition from womb, to hospital, and finally home. Rachel is doing great! We appreciate all the flowers, text messages, phone calls, and emails congratulating us on our beautiful little girl. We have more pictures and if you would like to see them email Ken (kwr13@q.com) and he will provide the link. Let's hope we get SOME sleep tonight.

Finally...Maya Arrives

Maya Lianne Rogers was born at 2:33 PM on Wednesday, August 20, weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces, and 20.5 inches long.
After 18 hours of Pitocin, Maya's heartbeat started dropping with each contraction, so the doctor decided that a C-section was the best course of action. During the procedure, it was quickly discovered that Maya managed to wrap her umbilical cord around her body several times, including once around her head. As each contraction took place, Maya's head was pushed further down the berthing canal, effectively putting a kink in the umbilical cord, and cutting off blood flow. Thus, the Pitocin problems made perfect sense. Good call Dr. Hunter (a proud GWU Medical School alumni).

We learned quickly that Maya has been blessed with an outstanding set of lungs. She wailed from the time she left Mom's womb until she was wrapped up and given to Dad - 15 minutes! She was born with a full set of long, curly brown hair. She has large hands and feet.

Rachel is doing well. She has already managed to get on her feet and take small walks. Ken has never been more proud of her! Rachel remained strong through every phase of Maya's birth.

Maya had her first visit with the Pediatrician this morning. She came out with a clean bill of health. The doctors think we will be able to come home Friday evening. Ken will try to post some more pictures tonight, but promises to get them posted as soon as the Rogers family gets settled back at home in Port Orchard.

Still Waiting...

This post comes to you direct from St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma, WA. There is no baby yet. After two more doses of Cytotec, Rachel did not dilate. We are now exercising option #2 - Pitocin. The doctor started the Pitocin drip at 6 PM and wants to allow 12 hours to see if it speeds things along. If not, then we are looking at a C-Section tomorrow. Let's hope Maya takes the "Pitocin" hint and avoids the invasive eviction notice. Either way, it looks like she should arrive tomorrow. Then again, she has proven to be a stubborn kid, so who knows?

Obituary for One Fine Fish

Jaws Rogers, our family goldfish, died this afternoon from a long battle with swim bladder.

Jaws was born in Oct. 2005, at Petsmart in Silverdale, WA, and was a staple in our homes in Bremerton and Port Orchard.

Jaws enjoyed swimming, fine dining, and watching classic fish films. His favorite films include "Jaws II," "A Fish Called Wanda," and "Finding Nemo."

A private memorial service was held at 6 p.m. today in front of our Powder Room toilet followed by a "burial at sea" with full honors.

Top 10 Reasons Why Maya Refuses to be Born

10. She's waiting for the Chicago Bears to actually draft a QB.
9. She's protesting her Astrological sign (Leo ends 8/22) and wants to be a Virgo.
8. She's wants Dad's goldfish, Jaws, to die. Daisy should be her ONLY pet.
7. She wants to share her birthday with the REAL Kenny Rogers (he turns 70 on 8/21).
6. She is still negotiating her initial 529 deposit.
5. She wanted her day and refused to share with her Rogers' Grandparents Anniversary (8/16)
4. She is waiting for Grandpa Jay's motorcycle to arrive in Utah - SOLIDARITY!!
3. She did not want to jinx Michael Phelps's chances of winning 8 gold medals.
2. She is waiting for the Cubs to win the World Series.

And the #1 reason is....

As her namesake would say..."I am worth waiting for, people!!"

How Stubborn Can One Baby Be???

The doctor decided to try and induce Maya today. She's a week late and I still wasn't dilated, so this seemed like a reasonable thing to do. So, we went to the hospital and did three doses of a drug called Cytotec that's supposed to induce contractions and soften the cervix (sorry if this is too much detail). And after those three doses and walking at least 10 miles of hospital hallways, I still am not dilated and we were discharged. Maya showed no reaction to the medicine, just happily sailing along at her normal heart rate.

One of my neighbors was telling me about a shirt she saw a pregnant woman wearing that said "Eviction Notice" and an arrow pointing to her belly. I think we may need to buy this shirt! We are now scheduled to go back in for another induction on Tuesday. The doctor tells me that I will not be allowed to leave the hospital without a baby, so Maya will be arriving one way or another sometime next Tuesday or Wednesday. Let's hope this stubborness is not a precursor to her teenage years!

More details to come next week...

No, the baby hasn't arrived yet....

To answer your questions, yes, Rachel is still pregnant. No, we don't know when the baby is going to arrive. No, her doctor is not talking about inducing her yet. Yes, we'll let you all know when the baby arrives. That's the theme of our week thus far. Yesterday was Maya's due date and as of Rachel's doctor's appointment on Thursday, Maya was showing no signs or interest in leaving the womb. We have another doctor's appointment on Tuesday, so we'll see if anything has changed. In the meantime, Daisy continues to enjoy being an only child.
