Maya Lianne Rogers was born at 2:33 PM on Wednesday, August 20, weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces, and 20.5 inches long.
After 18 hours of Pitocin, Maya's heartbeat started dropping with each contraction, so the doctor decided that a C-section was the best course of action. During the procedure, it was quickly discovered that Maya managed to wrap her umbilical cord around her body several times, including once around her head. As each contraction took place, Maya's head was pushed further down the berthing canal, effectively putting a kink in the umbilical cord, and cutting off blood flow. Thus, the Pitocin problems made perfect sense. Good call Dr. Hunter (a proud GWU Medical School alumni).
We learned quickly that Maya has been blessed with an outstanding set of lungs. She wailed from the time she left Mom's womb until she was wrapped up and given to Dad - 15 minutes! She was born with a full set of long, curly brown hair. She has large hands and feet.
Rachel is doing well. She has already managed to get on her feet and take small walks. Ken has never been more proud of her! Rachel remained strong through every phase of Maya's birth.
Maya had her first visit with the Pediatrician this morning. She came out with a clean bill of health. The doctors think we will be able to come home Friday evening. Ken will try to post some more pictures tonight, but promises to get them posted as soon as the Rogers family gets settled back at home in Port Orchard.
